The Election activities in Asam Sahitya Sabha have began, but this time around, it will not be like the past process.
For the first time in the Sabha's history, a seven-member high-level committee will choose the next president, according to the new constitution. Among these shall be Dr. Suryakanta Hazarika, president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Vice President Girish Sandikai, General Secretary Dr. Upendranath Sharma, former president Dr. Kuladhar Saikia, former Vice President Mrinalini Devi, a distinguished female member, and a renowned scholar. The committee will prepare a shortlist of five candidates.
Two former General Secretaries, novelist, former General Secretary, who was also the Asst. High Court Advocate and a well-known literary personality, are among the prominent aspirants for the president's post as Umesh Deka and Dr. Malini Goswami. What is significant this time is the strong sentiment to have a female president. Simultaneously, for the General Secretary's position, names in the contention list are Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Devajit Bora, and Ajit Kumar Sharma. Ballot papers will be circulated among the branches and districts for voting on the lists, and as is traditional, the Vice President and General Secretary will also be elected through separate elections.
